The state of post-partum depression (PPD) in the US: Moms in one community get care. In another they get silence.

We have one country, two realities.

Urban or Suburban Mom:

  1. Routine screening at her postpartum check-up.
  2. Multiple mental health providers to choose from.
  3. A therapist specializing in perinatal mental health.
  4. A support group for new moms in her neighborhood.
  5. Telehealth as a convenience, but not a necessity.

Rural Mom:

  1. Nearest OB-GYN? 90 minutes away.
  2. No perinatal mental health specialists in town.
  3. No local support group, maybe Facebook moms’ pages.
  4. Stigma: “People will talk if they see me at the clinic.”
  5. Telehealth needed to overcome geographic barriers.

Women with PPD in Rural America face an uphill battle. Fewer specialists. More stigma. A system that wasn’t built for them.

Every mother deserves care. Regardless of her zip code.
