Postpartum Depression in America: A Tale of Two Realities
Post author: Eric Arzubi, MD|March 20, 2025

The state of post-partum depression (PPD) in the US: Moms in one community get care. In another they get silence.
We have one country, two realities.
Urban or Suburban Mom:
- Routine screening at her postpartum check-up.
- Multiple mental health providers to choose from.
- A therapist specializing in perinatal mental health.
- A support group for new moms in her neighborhood.
- Telehealth as a convenience, but not a necessity.
Rural Mom:
- Nearest OB-GYN? 90 minutes away.
- No perinatal mental health specialists in town.
- No local support group, maybe Facebook moms’ pages.
- Stigma: “People will talk if they see me at the clinic.”
- Telehealth needed to overcome geographic barriers.
Women with PPD in Rural America face an uphill battle. Fewer specialists. More stigma. A system that wasn’t built for them.
Every mother deserves care. Regardless of her zip code.
